Joe Halliwell of Wakefield was recognized for his work at the table which received a $1500 grant on that day.
Joe has coordinated the My Brothers Table shuttle program which provides a weeks worth of frozen meals, dry and canned goods for terminally or chronically ill individuals, and if needed, their families, for 14 years.
All the people served by this free program are referred by social workers or health care professionals and people who are homebound, are too young for meals on wheels or in process of qualifying for other assistance such as disability. Most have fallen between the cracks and are overwhelmed by illnesses- from severe diabetes to CP to heart conditions to cancer. Many are wheelchair bound. |
Some of “Joe’s people” remain on the program for years (in between hospitalizations), while others find alternative help or pass away. Joe is organizer, driver, volunteer coordinator, and menu planner and packer for this program. Most importantly he is friend and confident to the 15 or so people who receive the meals on a weekly basis. For some people he is their link to the world. He carries back needed dietary requests and informs us staff of changes in their health.
Eight years ago he also took on organizing a monthly for at risk seniors identified by Greater Lynn Senior Services. Joe works with our chef to plan a menu that the seniors would enjoy. He then takes it up, delivers and serves the meal. Joe also works with, and mentors a young assistant each month. Our volunteers fight over the chance to go with Joe and spend time with the seniors. |
